Custom Precision Optics and Diffraction Gratings

Bach Research Corporation manufactures precision custom optics and diffraction gratings. We work carefully with customers to achieve their unique specifications.
Bach Reseach provide custom manufacturing services for ruled gratings, holographic gratings, replica gratings (both holographic and ruled), diamond-turned surfaces, polished optics, and optical coatings. Bach Research employees draw from a variety of backgrounds and expertise. Collectively Bach Research employees have over 120 years experience in optical fabrication, optical coatings, diffraction gratings, and optical testing.

  • Optical Polishing: 
    The fabrication of precision custom optics starts with the procurement of materials and the generating and polishing of the substrate. Bach Research has the expertise to manufacture optics from a variety of optical materials and in various configurations. They can achieve a polished surface roughness of less than four angstroms RMS, on glass, metals and single-crystal silicon.
  • Optical Coating: 
    Their coating operation is tailored to support the manufacture of diffraction gratings and replicated optics. They use a variety of advanced industry recognized techniques for the deposition of metallic coatings and dielectric overcoats.
  • Diamond-Turned Optics: 
    Bach Research has the expertise and capability to diamond-turn custom optics. From small, flat laser mirrors to large parabolas and diamond-machined gratings, contact us with your requirements
  • Diffraction Gratings: 
    Bach Research takes tremendous pride in the art of crafting diffraction gratings and providing solutions to difficult technological challenges. They can manufacture gratings for use in all applications, from the far IR all the way down to the X-ray. They can create original gratings and replicas on a variety of materials and in unique configurations.

Facility and Equipment Overview

20,000 sq ft – including manufacturing areas, coating, ruling, diamond turning, testing, clean room and storage

Coating Lab – 6 coating chambers (cryo pumped and diffusion pumped)
Material deposited: Au, Al, Cr, Ni, Rh, Pt, Ir, Os, MgF2, SiO
32 inch apertures. Deposition sources: PVD and Electron gun.

Diamond Turning Lab – 5 single point diamond turning lathes.
36 inch plano apertures, curves, spheres. Materials: Al, Cu, ZnSe, Ge

Ruling Lab – 6 ruling engines. Each engine in its own dedicated temperature controlled room.
Ruling engines are geared and sequenced for certain designs of diffraction grating. Wavelength coverage and groove densities vary from X-ray to Far IR.
Coarsest line spacing: 7.2 mm per line/groove.
Highest line spacing: 7,200 lines per mm.
Blaze angles: 0.1 deg – 90 deg.
Largest grating manufactured to date: 10 x 48 inch (although a machine is set up for gratings up to 48 x 48 inch, if required)
Types of gratings: Type 1 gratings, Reflection and Transmission.

IR gratings / High Laser Damage threshold gratings – low line density – typically under 600 lines per mm on metal substrates, eg Cu, Invar.

Curved gratings for Hyperspectral applications – Offner / Dyson gratings, UV – IR

High line density gratings for UV – X-ray. Typically 3,600 – 4,800 lines per mm.

Both original and replicated gratings are offered.

Testing areas – Multiple lasers, HeNe, HeCd, Air tables
Microscopes, Nomarski, Interference Microscopes
12 inch Zygo, Wyko, AFM profilers, Spectrometers, Angstrometers.
Some projects require a specific set up to test performance. Options are to work with customer either on site at Bach or at customer’s facility.

Polishing -.Glass polishing is subcontracted to US companies. The polishing of metal (Invar / SS) substrates for high power lasers is carried out in-house.
